The craft

A setter, first.

Setting is the part of a piece of jewellery where most of it is won or lost. A well-cut stone in a poorly-set head loses its life; a quietly-set stone in a considered piece keeps catching the eye for decades. Ian trained as a diamond setter first, and only later moved into full bespoke commissions — the craft underneath all of it is still setting.

The work behind the work

Trusted by houses, working under his own name.

For many years Ian has been the setter that other jewellery houses send their most demanding pieces to — micro pavé, invisible settings, restoration that needs to be invisible. Atelier Barnard is the work he does under his own name, for private clients, from the workshop in Palma.

The island

A British jeweller, on Mallorca, by choice.

Ian lives in Mallorca with his family. The workshop is a few minutes from home, in the old town of Palma. Clients arrive from the island, from across Europe, and during the summer from the harbour. The pace of the island suits the pace of the work.
